The Wando Public Library is announcing a science fair just for homeschool students. This is a great opportunity for young scientists to demonstrate what they’ve learned. Homeschool students in kindergarten through fifth grade are invited to show off their science projects on April 20 at 2:00 p.m. Winners will be announced for first, second and third place. Read on to learn more about participation.

Why enter a science fair? Participating in science fairs lets a student explore a particular interest, introduces scientific thinking and exposes students to STEM careers like engineering, medicine or technology. Getting involved is also a great chance for your child to meet and engage with their peers.

Where can I learn more about science fair projects? The Charleston County Public Library (CCPL) branches have plenty of books to get you started. I’m fond of Steve Spangler’s Super Cool Science Experiments for Kids! and Janice VanCleave’s Step by Step Science Experiments series for specific topics. Check out ScienceBuddies.org, a comprehensive web site featuring a Topic Selector Tool that uses grade level and individual interests to help your student find engaging and age-appropriate projects. You can explore CCPL’s digital resources for children for even more learning opportunities. Early readers will like PebbleGo for easy-to-read science articles. Arbordale eBooks introduces science and math concepts with picture books. You can access CCPL digital resources at home with your library card.

Visit the Wando Public Library children’s department to register and pick up an informational packet that includes science fair requirements and guidelines, plus the rubric judges will use to evaluate each entry. Submissions will be judged in two categories: Lower Elementary, Kindergarten through second grade and Upper Elementary, third grade through fifth grade.

I would like to thank our Homeschool Hangout families for inspiring this event. Thank you for including us in your learning journey! If you are interested in connecting with other homeschool families, join us at Homeschool Hangout each month. Our next event is on April 26 at 11:00 a.m.
