In honor of the third annual VFW National Day of Service, local members of Charleston Post 10624 and assorted volunteers gathered on May 4 in Mount Pleasant to receive food drop-offs for struggling military veterans.

Disabled veteran Chad McPeters was among the individuals who helped spread word of the charity endeavor by installing signs throughout Mount Pleasant for the drive-through event that saw donors pull up and drop off large quantities of non-perishable food.

"For me service has always been part of my life ever since I joined the Army at 18 years years old and I haven't stopped since," commented McPeters.

The 2023 collection, according to Post Commander Bill King, yielded 400 pounds of food from the drive-through and an additional 2,000 pounds of consumables contributed by Humana Military Healthy Care. A similar bounty was projected for this year's drive.

All the donated items, said King, would be headed to the Charleston-based VA Foodbank to service needy veterans, some of whom are homeless.

In addition, junior volunteers were on hand during the Saturday collaboration to sell lemonade, with half of the profits also going to the local VA.
