01) Old Wando Reunion

With the 50th anniversary of the graduation of Mount Pleasant’s original Wando High School (Class of 74) fast approaching, former students are inviting long lost classmates to join them for a March 2 reunion celebration.

Former students celebrating their golden graduation anniversaries were Old Wando’s first scholars to earn their diplomas, as members of this class attended Moultrie Junior High School in the 7th and 8th grades before advancing to the eponymous Moultrie High School on the same campus from grades 9-11.

During the fall of 1973, this class moved to the new Wando High School, located at the corner of Mathis Ferry and Whipple Roads.

According to locals, a few years before Moultrie High School closed its doors, students from Laing High School — Mt. Pleasant’s largest segregated education venue — were integrated into Moultrie High School. Prior to that, Laing High School operated from 1953 until 1970, when the school was transformed into Laing Middle School. That property was eventually sold and a new Laing Middle School was built off Hamlin Road — adjacent to Jenny Moore Elementary — where both schools remain today.

Reunion organizers are asking 1974 graduates to contact them at Wando74Reunion@gmail.com for an invitation to this milestone event. They are encouraged to include their phone numbers to facilitate communication.
